FACTS ABOUT SNAILS FARMING AND THE EXPORT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA
Snail farming, along with maize, poultry, and fish farming, stands out as a highly sought-after agricultural pursuit in Nigeria. Its appeal lies in being cost-effective, requiring minimal land, and primarily demanding knowledge and time. The cultivation of snails for consumption or economic purposes is termed Heliculture.
Recognizing its profitability and potential for creating job opportunities, the government has endorsed snail farming as a lucrative venture. Notably, the Lagos State Government recently conducted training sessions for youths in snail farming, while the Ekiti State Government unveiled a 5 billion Naira snail farm in 2021, ranking as the second-largest globally and generating over 5,000 jobs.
Key Points on Snail Farming in Nigeria
1. Thriving Industry: The snail farming sector in Nigeria is valued at an impressive $12 billion, with an annual consumption of approximately 450,000 tons. The yearly demand for snails in the country reaches around 7.5 million kg, and the market price ranges from ₦250 to ₦600 for a medium-sized snail.
2. Profitable Species: The African Land Giant Snails, particularly Achatina Fulica (East African land snail), Achatina Achatina (giant Ghana snail or Giant tiger snail), and Archachatina Marginata (giant West African snail), are the most lucrative species for farming. Among these, Achatina Achatina, recognized as the largest snail globally, is highly favored by Nigerian snail farmers. This species, known for its substantial reproductive capacity, can lay up to 1,200 eggs annually.
3. Opportunities for Farmers: Snail farming presents promising opportunities for those venturing into the industry, given the robust demand and favorable market conditions. Aspiring snail farmers can capitalize on the consistent market demand and explore various species to enhance their profitability.
4. Export Prospects: Beyond domestic consumption, there are export opportunities for snail farmers in Nigeria. With the industry's substantial value, there exists the potential to tap into international markets, contributing to the country's economic growth.
Prospects for Aspiring Snail Farmers
While snail farming proves to be a profitable venture, the industry faces challenges in meeting the high demand for snail meat, particularly during the dry season. The rainy season sees an abundance of handpicked snails from forests due to favorable weather conditions that coax snails out of hiding.
However, the dry season places a reliance on snail farmers for market supply, resulting in scarcity and elevated prices. In response, there's a collective appeal from snail farmers for more youths to engage in snail farming in Nigeria, aiming to address the supply-demand gap and contribute to the industry's growth.
Global Export Opportunity
A significant international demand exists for African Land Giant Snail meat, particularly from African restaurants and overseas shops. Beyond their culinary appeal, snails are sought-after ingredients for beauty and pharmaceutical products, with a substantial market for snail serum. The beauty and cosmetic industry showcases a diverse array of products crafted exclusively from snail extracts, reflecting a burgeoning global interest in these versatile and valuable resources.
